Floating floors, day...?

Did a bit more flooring since the last post - finished off the study on Cup Day.

We salvaged the temporary front door (it was going to be thrown away anyway!) and stuck a couple of trestle legs underneath it to turn it into our new study table. Not sure if we'll paint it, vinyl wrap it or do something else, it's a bit rough at the moment but looks nice and is huge!

Nearly finished the entry and hallway, and there's a few fiddly bits left under the stairs and towards the powder room and laundry.

Will need to find my jigsaw for some complex cuts near doorways, and re-arrange my dropsaw to do lengthway cuts.

Also finally got my iinet ADSL2+ connection established - bought a brand new ADSL router, and... well, nothing works. Lodged a fault report with iinet who will then take it up with Telstra if it's a Telstra wiring error. However, if there's a fault in the wiring internally, then it's yet one more stuffup to fix up. Unfortunately I think we got the worst data cablers in the world to do our house, with the antenna not connected to starserve and the data plugs not correctly attached - they all "fall in" to the wall cavity when I try to plug in a data cable. Meh. Anyway, should it turn out to be a problem with the internal wiring, I'll get it fixed up and send the bill to Metricon, who can then get the idiot cablers who stuffed it up in the first place to reimburse my costs.

  1. Floors look great -are you guys happy with them after such a big decision?

You didn't take of the skirting boards did you? Do you have standard height skirtings? Looks like there is still a decent amount of them showing. We are doing floors after handover too and I don't want to do the whole take the skirting off drama, nor have that beading around it all, not a fan of that at all..

Hope you get a resolution on the cabling soon, how frustrating..

We got our door dampers early this week too, thanks!

  2. Can I ask you a question, Tim? Did Metricon do the window flash for all your windows? What kind of window flash? At what stage did they do it? We are building a new house with Porter Davis. Thanks

  3. Hi Tim,

Love your benchtop. We are about to sign with Metricon too but wonder how thick is your benchtop ? We are thinking of 40mm, is yours the same ? love your colors scheme too.

  4. Hi Jose & Ed - yep the kitchen benchtops are 40mm stone, and the other stone benchtops in the wet rooms are standard 20mm.

Anonymous: Window flashing were done while bricking over windows were being done.

  5. shayne: yep we love the floors! Super hard work doing it yourself though, my back has aged a few decades in a few weeks. We got standard dressed all round skirting. We will be putting on bead though, found a good flat profile one at Bunnings. As for your floors, if you don't take the skirts off, you'll have to put in an expansion gap, and if you don't cover it with something, it'll catch all kinds of junk in there. Maybe consider vinyl planks?

  6. Hmm, thanks for the info Tim :) We will definitely NOT be doing the flooring ourselves, my other half is not handy in the slightest and although I am rather DIY savvy I know I wont have the time or patience with a 2 year old running about the place to even attempt it! Will probably look for the most discreet beading available or have the pro's take off the skirting and have a painter touch it up afterwards (when we decide what flooring to actually go with ;) )!

  7. Hi Tim. Thanks for your answer. So how did they do it? Did they seal around the windows with something and then bricking around? Thanks

  8. Hi Tim,
We are going to build imperial 54 with Metricon early next year. We are going to do our floors after handover like what you did, I just want to know did you get any refund or deduct for the standard Cat 1 tiles since we require them to leave us with concret only?
    Many thanks
    Walter

  9. Hi Walter; standard floorplans only tile the wet areas, the rest of the ground floor will be left as concrete anyway.

  10. Metricons current promotion they are offering cat 1 flooring throughout the house. You'll get a credit if you want to leave concrete only, however it would be minimal.
